Most of the time what looks like a “mosquito” is in fact the harmless and unrelated Crane Fly or Gnat (Culex pipiens).  Neither of these will bite.

Mosquitoes will bite, they are smaller with a long thin body, large eyes, long thin legs and veined wings.

The Culex molestus looks like the harmless gnat, but it will bite.
